The success rates of a glass ionomer cement and a resin-based fissure sealant placed by fifth-year undergraduate dental students

Abstract: The retention of GIC sealants was markedly inferior to the retention of resin-based sealants; however, GIC when used as a pit and fissure sealant was slightly more effective in preventing occlusal caries.

“…Our study demonstrates that Fuji VII is useful as a pit and fissure sealant for children and effectively prevents caries. We found no statistically significant difference in the incidence of caries between Fuji VII and Concise sealants whatever in LR group or in HR group, which was consistent with studies on related materials 15,32) . There might be several interpretations.…”

“…In the present study, rubber dam isolation was not used, as had been reported for many other sealant studies. 20,27,29,30,31,32 Th is deviat ion from the goi ng protocol for resin-based procedures is justified since it was shown that rubber dam does not improve the retention of resin-based sealants. 33 It was possible to blind treatment for the children, as only one kind of treatment was performed at each of the schools.…”

“…Thus, better retention results are expected in Bis-GMA based than in GIC-based materials, either conventional or resin-modified GIC used as sealant [11][12][13][14][15][16]. Although a macroscopic loss of GIC sealant occurs, small portions of the material stays on the fissure bottom releasing fluoride, which perhaps assures protection and prevents caries development even in cases that the sealant seems to disappear clinically [17].…”
