The study of integrated LED-backlight plate fabricated by micromachining technique

Abstract: Generally, a backlight unit (BLU) is considered for the light module of a thin film transistor (TFT) LCD. A typical BLU is comprised of a light guide plate (LGP) and some optical sheets, such as two diffusion sheets, two prism sheets and a reflection sheet. To make the traditional BLU thinner and brighter, we develop an integrated LEDbacklight plate (BLP) on microstructures-based, which combine several functions of optical sheets to save the space and fabrication process. The microstructures and the reflective… Show more

“…The finished PMMA cone-like LGP microstructure is further used for luminance measurement at nine test positions (Chien and Chen 2009) which follows Illuminating Engineering Society Standards IES LM-79 -08 from American National Standards Institute. Figure 9a, b shows the BM9 measured light luminescence image and the 9-spot values of the good PMMA cone-like LGP microstructure in Fig.…”

“…The LGP consists of scattering patterns onto the bottom surface. They convert line-or point-shaped illumination from the side of LGP into surface-shaped illumination at the top surface by changing the propagating direction of the incident light (Chien and Chen 2009). Low luminous efficiency in BLM is always a serious problem and often leads to lower the LCD brightness and high power consumption.…”

“…Therefore, the ratio between the amount of the LGP output beam propagating into the VHOEs and that propagating along the LGP can be given by the length ratio of l n to a n , and this value decides the intensity uniformity of the total LGP output beam. For quantitative analysis of the intensity uniformity of the LGP output depending on the height of the prism, a parameter called intensity uniformity is defined here as follows [20].…”
