“…Although this electroencephalographic (EEG) activity has been observed in several brain regions, for example, entorhinal cortex (Alonso and Garcia‐Austt, ) or cingulate cortex (Landfield and McGaugh, ), the hippocampal formation (HPC) is considered to be the main structure involved in the generation of theta (Bland, ). Theta rhythm in rodents has been postulated to be involved in arousal (Green and Arduini, ), attention (Bennett, ), behavioral functions (Vanderwolf, ; O'Keefe and Nadel, ), sensorimotor integration (Bland and Oddie, ), cognitive processes (Winson, ), and emotion (Gray, ).…”

“…Jeffrey Alan Gray developed the first version of the reinforcement sensitivity theory of personality in the early 1970s on the basis of the combination of the data collected from animal studies and from accumulating knowledge of the function of neurotransmitter systems of the mammalian brain; in addition, it had influences from the descriptive personality model of Eysenck (Corr, ). BIS is one of the three temperament traits of Gray's temperament model, the others being behavioural activation system (BAS) and fight flight system (Gray, , ). The latter two, however, are not relevant in regard to our study question.…”

“…A second system is believed to govern the engagement of action and has been referred to as the Behavioral Activation System (BAS; Fowles, 1980, 1988) or, alternatively, the Behavioral Approach System (Gray, 1982) or the Behavior Facilitation System (Depue & Collins, 1999; Depue & Iacono, 1989). Although conceptions of the BIS and BAS were originally developed from behavioral neuroscience research conducted primarily on nonhuman animals (Gray, 1972), the BIS/BAS model has proven to be a useful framework for understanding motivation and personality as they apply to a range of normal and abnormal human behaviors. More recently, the development of reliable self‐report measures of BIS and BAS sensitivity has facilitated the translation of BIS/BAS from animal models to the study of human social behavior.…”
