The Structure of Developmental Theories

Abstract: A new method for analyzing the structure of developmental theories is presented. The method, based on a generative approach, tries to make explicit the underlying ‘grammar’ of a theory. Two aspects of the grammar are discussed: first, the rules for generating state and sequence descriptions; second, the rules for generating transition descriptions. The state and sequence rules are divided into a retrospective and a prospective type. The latter distinction corresponds with two general families of developmental … Show more

“…van Geert's modeling of Vygotsky's ZPD grows out of his previous efforts of a similar kind [van Geert, 1992] and is solidly based on his long interest in formal analysis of theories that claim to study development [van Geert, 1983[van Geert, , 1986[van Geert, , 1987[van Geert, , 1988. In some sense, van Geert's focus on the ZPD is incidental -he is not interested in the whole complexity of that term [see Valsiner and van der Veer, 1993, for a substantive analysis], but rather in two spe cific features of the concept: (a) the emphasis on systemic (mutual) causality, and (b) a focus on the forward-oriented time-bound nature of development.…”

“…Since there are three features, and four developmental stages in a sequence, it follows that the substitution operation takes the simple form described here. There are much more complex operations, however, for instance in Erikson's model [ van Geert, 1987b]. There exist several heuristic rules for finding the form of the operations applicable to specific developmental models [van Geert.…”
