The structure and function of the vegetative mycelium of ectomycorrhizal plants IV. Qualitative analysis of carbohydrate contents of mycelium interconnecting host plants.

Abstract: SUMMARYPlants of Pimis spp. were grown in observation chambers with the mycorrhizal fungi Suillus hovinus, Pisolithus tinctorius or Paxillus itivohitus. .\hev interconnecting mycelial systems had developed between plants, individual hosts in some chambers of each species were fed with "CO.^. Mycelia from radioactively labelled and unlabelk-d chambers were harvested and their carbohydrates were extracted, separated chromatographically and identified. The major carbobydrates in all of tbe fungi were trehalose, m… Show more

“…Arabitol and mannitol, on the other hand, appear to serve a largely translocatory function (Soderstrom et al, 1988). It is therefore interesting that the concentrations of arabitol and mannitol were lower in older P. sitchensis/T.…”

“…In ectomycorrhizal basidiomycetes, trehalose is regarded as the major soluble storage carbohydrate (Martin, Canet & Marchal, 1984;Soderstrom et al, 1988). Arabitol and mannitol, on the other hand, appear to serve a largely translocatory function (Soderstrom et al, 1988).…”

“…In ectomycorrhizas, photosynthates move from the autotroph to the fungal mantle, where they are rapidly converted to metabolic intermediates, of which trehalose and mannitol are dominant (Söderström et al 1988). Since ectomycorrhizal fungi are totally dependent on their host for carbon, they undoubtedly increase the sink strength of the root system.…”
