The Streptococcal Antifibrinolysin Test in Clinical Use 1

Abstract: The streptococcal antifibrinolysin test of Tillett and Garner (1) had promise of being a practical serological method for the diagnosis of a recent hemolytic streptococcal infection. The test is simple to perform, inexpensive, and uniform in its results. In the experience of Tillett and his associates (2,3), the test was generally positive in diseases caused by the hemolytic streptococcus, and negative in non-streptococcal infections. Subsequent observations by other investigators, however, indicated that the … Show more

“…The ratio of inhibitor to activator in the fetus is also not known. That the lytic system of human newborns is different from that of adults was first suggested by Boisvert [17]. He observed that blood clots from newborn infants, in contrast to those of their mothers, were resistant to lysis in the presence of streptococcal culture supernates.…”

“…In general, the results of such antifibrinolysin tests have indicated that the development of antifibrinolytic properties in the plasma is correlated with infection due to the ,8-hemolytic streptococcus (3,4). In some instances, however, the results have appeared to be non-specific (5,6).…”

“…Unfortunately, it has not been possible in the past to obtain sufficient purified material for all requirements of the stud-ies involved in these reports. Therefore, protease determinations were made with selected batches of crude streptokinase, titrated to determine those lots and dilutions which would give the highest (18,(33)(34)(35)(36). In Table VI are presented the results obtained by using the methods described above.…”
