RESUMO -O objetivo deste artigo é discutir diferentes abordagens teóricas que têm orientado o estudo da surdez. Publicações dos campos da psicologia, psiquiatria, psicanálise, estudos surdos e teorias da narrativa são utilizadas como base para discussão. Os modelos clínico-terapêutico e socioantropológico, já tradicionais, são apresentados inicialmente e exemplificados por meio da questão da inteligência e da saúde mental. Em seguida, apresenta-se a crescente contribuição da psicanálise e das teorias da narrativa para a compreensão do sujeito surdo. Argumenta-se que essas duas perspectivas teóricas redimensionam a centralidade de alguns conceitos, contribuindo para ampliar a compreensão da surdez.Palavras-chave: surdez; psicologia; psicanálise; estudos surdos; narrativa. Discourses on Deafness:Disability, Difference, Singularity and Construction of Meaning ABSTRACT -The objective of this article is to discuss different theoretical approaches that have guided the study of deafness. Publications in the fields of psychology, psychiatry, psychoanalysis, deaf studies and theories of narrative are used as basis for discussion. The clinical-therapeutical and socio-anthropological models, now traditional, are initially presented and exemplified trough the questions of intelligence and mental health. After that, the increasing contribution of psychoanalysis and the theories of narrative for the comprehension of the deaf subject is presented. It is argued that these two theoretical perspectives resize the centrality of some concepts, contributing to expand the comprehension of deafness.Keywords: deafness; psychology; psychoanalysis; deaf studies; narrative. Ricoeur (1983/1994) afirma que "se uma ação pode ser narrada, é porque ela já está articulada em signos, regras, normas: é, desde sempre, simbolicamente mediatizada" (p. 91). Os discursos produzidos no campo das ciências são também marcados, desde sempre, pela racionalidade do momento social e histórico no qual são produzidos. Nesse sentido, a psicologia não está e nem poderia estar imune ao que se observa nas demais áreas que se dedicam ao estudo da surdez. Quais são os discursos que marcam o lugar a partir do qual se fala sobre a surdez? Dois grandes modelos podem ser facilmente reconhecidos, pois a literatura da área se dedicou amplamente, nos últimos anos, a demarcar as diferenças entre a perspectiva clínico-terapêutica (para a qual a noção de deficiência é central) e a concepção socioantropológica de surdez (baseada na noção de diferença). Este artigo iniciará com uma retomada dos principais pressupostos desses modelos tomando, como exemplo, dois temas importantes para a psicologia: a inteligência e a saúde mental. Porém, já há uma década atrás, na área da educação dos surdos, Skliar (1998) chamava a atenção para a necessidade de uma reflexão e desconstrução dos usuais contrastes binários tradicionais que marcam as metanarrativas sobre a surdez. Psychotherapy holds the promise of helping people come to terms with their traumas and tragedies. Great responsibilities are inherent in this promise. The primary aim of this paper is to bring into sharp focus the ways in which patients' and psychotherapists' attitudes toward "pity" influence therapists' attempts to fulfill these responsibilities.First, I will present an overview of the varied and contradictory meanings pity has acquired over time and circumstances.
