Background: Flies are of medical importance and cause problems by transmitting mechanically various pathogens to human and animals and myiasis. This study was performed to determine the diversity and abundance of medically important flies in Tabriz city, Northwest of Iran. Methods: Adult flies and their larvae trapping was conducted on a monthly basis from July to October 2021. Then, the trapped flies were identified morphologically using valid identification keys. Simpson index, Shannon index, Jackknife Procedure, Margalef index, Menhinick index, Camargo, Modified Nee, and Smith and Wilson indexes were calculated to determine species diversity and species richness and species evenness as well as species biodiversity of flies. Also, the rare or dominant species was estimated by Rarity richness index. Results: In this study, totally 17 species flies including Musca domestica, Muscina stabulans, Phaonia spp., Hydrotaea spp., Musca autumnalis, Lucilia sericata, Chrysomya albiceps, Calliphora vicina, Sarcophaga africa, Sarcophaga variegata, Sarcophaga argyrostoma, Sarcophaga aegyptica, Sarcophaga sp., Sarcophaga lehmanni, Sarcophaga (Liosarcophaga) spp., Fannia sp., and Anthomyia sp. from five families (Muscidae, Calliphoridae, Sarcophagidae, Fanniidae, and Anthomyiidae) were identified. According to the bootstrapping method, Simpson index and Shannon index were 0.792 and 2.638, respectively and the number of common species was estimated to be 6.22 at the 95% confidence level. The highest species diversity was related to Sarcophagidae family and the lowest of that was related to Muscidae family by Shannon index. Musca autumnalisand M. domestica species were recognized as the rare species and the dominant species, respectively. Conclusions: The highest number of fly species (14) were caught in August and September, and the lowest number of species (9) in October. Due to the medical and health importance of flies, it is recommended to take measures to control population of these insects.

A BS TRA CT . 231 species of the family Vespidae (Hymenoptera, Vespoidea) of Iran, in 55 genera belonging to 4 subfamilies Eumeninae (45 genera, 184 species), Masarinae (5 genera, 24 species), Polistinae (2 genera, 17 species) and Vespinae (3 genera, 6 species) are listed. An overall assessment of the distribution pattern of the vespid species in Iran indicates a complex fauna of different biogeographic regions. 111 species are found in both Eastern and Western Palaearctic regions, while 67 species were found only in the Eastern Palaearctic region. Few species (14 species -6.1%) of various genera are known as elements of central and western Asian area and their area of distribution is not known in Europe (West Palaearctic) and in the Far East. The species that were found both in the Oriental and Afrotropical Regions comprises 11.7 and 15.6% the Iranian vespid fauna, respectively. Many species (48, 20.8%) are exclusively recorded from Iran and as yet there is no record of these species from other countries. The highest percentage of the vespid species are recorded from Sistan-o Baluchestan (42 species, 18.2%), Alborz (42 species, 18.2%), Fars (39 species, 16.9%) and Tehran provinces (38 Species 16.5%), representing the fauna of the Southeastern, North-and South Central of the country.

The traditional cattle rearing system is the permanent host for various zoonotic diseases that are transmitted through insects. Flies and ticks are insects that harm farmers because they decrease productivity and spread disease from livestock to livestock and to humans. The community partnership program for cattle breeders in Batuputih Bitung village is a community education activity that aims to increase the understanding of nuisance insects and their potential problems, identify the types of nuisance insects and their potential control. This activity was conducted from April to September 2021 and involved a group of cattle breeders and the Sam Ratulangi University Faculty of Animal Husbandry team (lecturers and students). The method of implementing this activity was carried out in 3 stages, namely discussions and interviews, surveys of nuisance insects on cattle, and the practice of introducing insects and their control. The cattle farmers in Batuputih Village have understood the livestock pest insects and their potential problems. The types of nuisance insects identified were: Haematobia exigua, Stomoxys sp., Musca sp., Tabanus sp. and ticks and some of the traditional methods of controlling them. It is necessary to monitor the effectiveness of insect population control so that the potential for zoonoses that spread through insects can be prevented early.Keywords: insect; vector; disease; cattle; Surra AbstrakSistem pemeliharaan ternak sapi yang bersifat tradisional dapat merupakan induk semang tetap berbagai penyakit zoonosis yang ditularkan melalui serangga. Program kemitraan masyarakat peternak sapi desa Batuputih Bitung merupakan kegiatan edukasi masyarakat yang bertujuan meningkatkan pemahaman akan serangga pengganggu dan potensi permasalahannya. Kegiatan ini melibatkan kelompok peternak sapi dan tim Fakultas Peternakan Universitas Sam Ratulangi (dosen dan mahasiswa) dan dilaksanakan pada bulan April hingga September 2021. Metode pelaksanaan kegiatan dilakukan dalam 3 tahap yaitu diskusi dan wawancara, survey serangga pengganggu pada ternak sapi, dan praktek pengenalan serangga dan pengendaliannya. Peternak sapi Desa Batuputih telah memahami serangga pengganggu ternak (Haematobia exigua, Stomoxys sp., Musca sp., Tabanus sp. dan caplak) dan beberapa cara pengendaliannya secara tradisional. Diperlukan kegiatan pemantauan efektivitas pengendalian populasi serangga agar potensi zoonosis yang menyebaran melalui serangga dapat dicegah secara dini.
