The status of the contralateral ear in children with acquired cholesteatoma

Abstract: At the time of surgery for MEC, 54.5% of CLEs presented with abnormalities. The most frequent findings were retraction of the tympanic membrane (30%) and SOM, 22.4%. Also, 7% of patients presented with bilateral MEC. Thirty-four percent (20 cases) of retraction pockets diagnosed at the beginning of the observation period required surgical intervention. During the intervention in 20% of cases (12/59 cases) diagnosis of cholesteatoma was confirmed. At the end of the observation period bilateral cholesteatoma was… Show more

“…The mean age of children with acquired cholesteatoma has been estimated at 9.7 years (range: 6.4 to 13) [ 42 ]. It has also been estimated that 7–10% of affected children have simultaneous bilateral cholesteatomas or develop subsequent contralateral cholesteatomas during follow-up [ 53 , 54 ]; both of these conditions are more common in girls [ 55 ].…”

“…In contrast, other authors claim that age has nothing to do with tympanoplasty outcomes in children [32,33]. On the other hand, Hassman concluded that contralateral ear abnormal status must be taken into account, since it is an indicator of nasopharyngeal pathology that might affect ET correct functioning [34].…”

“…Assessment of the eustachian tube in a perforated ear can be diffi cult [6] and we can therefore resort to the contralateral ear function to assess both tubes function and their relationship with the nasopharynx [7,8].…”

“…A similar incidence was demonstrated by Mohammed Yousuf et al(2011) (5) -poster superior marginal (69.23%) or in the attic region (30.77%).Bilateral ear disease found in 9 patients (11.25%) and in 7 cases (8.75%) it is of unsafe type. According to Hassman et al(2012) (13) , bilateral cholesteatoma was diagnosed in 12.9% of children.…”
