The Status and Challenges of Industrial Engineering in South Africa

Abstract: The industrial engineering discipline in South Africa is examined by introducing the context of the discipline and by revisiting its history. The drivers influencing the context and future of industrial engineering in South Africa are also considered, and the discipline is analysed in terms of the following aspects: university qualifications, employment in industry sectors, race and gender profiles, use and competence in industry, and income profiles. The analysis is based on a recent survey sent to practising… Show more

“…In addition, industrial engineers within the same company but from different departments might use fundamentally different tools and methods. Several studies of the spread of industrial engineers in industry show that their skills, jobs, and specialities vary from very technical engineering-based occupations to softer business-and law-based consulting professions across tens of sectors [5,13].…”

“…Inherent in this desire and need to improve human life is the realisation that the environment and economy are also relevant. And the broad set of skills (legal, financial, and other) and mental connections at the disposal of the individuals in this discipline (which often leads to the criticism that these individuals are jacks of all trades but master of none) allows for more sustainable, humane, value-driven, and environmentallyfriendly solutions [4,5]. People are often unaware that such a discipline exists.…”

“…It is remarkable to note that production management is still a high-priority area of IE in South Africa [9]. This runs against the grain of Industry 4.0, where operations research that employs simulation and virtual plant models built on real-time data is the leading IE function.…”

“…In a recent excellent review of the status and challenges of IE in South Africa, Schutte [9] listed ten industry sectors where IEs in South Africa are employed, and nine IE sub-disciplines where IE-related research is carried out. However, his treatise was totally silent on any effects that the nascent Industry 4.0 could have on IE.…”

“…There is a general voice from researchers advocating for application of lean techniques in any form of activity which include non-profit organisations' operations [4], information technology [26] and accounting services [7]. Despite Lean philosophy being an emblem of Industrial Engineering, the technique is yet to be fully adopted into the South African industry even though the discipline of Industrial Engineering had been existent in the country since 1961 [45]. …”
