The State–Trait Hopelessness Scale

Abstract: Hopelessness is predictive in the development of coronary heart disease (CHD) and can persist in patients after a CHD event, adversely affecting recovery. Hopelessness may represent a temporary response (state) or a chronic outlook (trait). Common hopelessness measures fail to differentiate state from trait hopelessness, a potentially important differentiation for treatment. The State-Trait Hopelessness Scale (STHS) was developed and pilot tested with two groups of college students (n = 39 and 190) and patient… Show more

“…If hopelessness is an enduring trait, measures of hopelessness would be expected to have high test–retest reliability. A measure that does address the state versus trait distinction, the State-Trait Hopelessness Scale, has reported retest correlations of state and trait hopelessness over a 6-week interval (state 0.65, trait 0.74) and over a 6-month interval (state 0.61, trait 0.78) in hospitalised patients with coronary heart disease 28. Again, the sizes of these retest correlations are not dissimilar to those seen in the brief measures reported in our study after a 2-week interval.…”

“…9 Reliability and validity of the STHS are established in patients with CHD. 28 Earlier factor analysis identified a state hopelessness factor (6 of 10 state items) and a trait hopelessness factor (8 of 13 trait items). 28 For this study, only hopelessness factor items (6 state and 8 trait items) were analyzed because the aim was to determine differences in hopelessness between exercise groups.…”

“…Many of the cardiac patients suffer from hopelessness (Dunn et al, 2014;Kohlmann et al, 2016), which is an established risk factor of suicidal behaviour (Beck, Kovacs, & Weissman, 1975;Wenzel & Beck, 2008;Wetzel, 1976). In addition, patients described feeling responsible for overcoming depression themselves (Alderson, Foy, Glidewell, & House, 2014).…”
