“…We did not find any association of chronic diseases and lifestyle factors with past-year suicidal ideation, contrary to studies in developed [16,40] and developing [20,41] countries. Our findings differ from existing evidence for the SSA countries [40] but are consistent with the data for other LMICs [34].…”

“…First, HBP was associated with past-year suicidal ideation among adults aged 31–45, and second, HBP, lack of exercise, and lifetime alcohol use were associated with past-year suicidal ideation among currently employed individuals. Our findings underscore the importance of suicidal ideation intervention in people with chronic diseases and certain lifestyle behaviors, particularly among currently employed individuals, in the Eswatini population [ 11 , 41 ].…”

“…Chronic medical illness is an independent risk factor for suicidal ideation, especially in the elderly population. 39,40 The pooled prevalence of suicidal ideation in tinnitus sufferers (20.6 per cent) is comparable to that of people with traumatic brain injury (3–33 per cent), 41 chronic pain (13.5 per cent) 42,43 and general medical conditions including cancer (0.7–46.3 per cent), 44 Parkinson's disease (30 per cent), 45 diabetes mellitus (16.2 per cent), 46 rheumatic diseases (26 per cent), 47 coronary artery disease (14 per cent) 48 and insomnia (25–32 per cent). 49 A greater disease burden (more than one medical illness) is also shown to increase the odds of suicidal ideation; this relationship persists after adjusting for moderating factors such as heavy alcohol use and depression.…”
