The Spread of Non-native Plant Species Collection of Cibodas Botanical Garden into Mt. Gede Pangrango National Park

Abstract: The role of botanic garden in spread of invasive alien plant species has concerned of international worldwide. The aim of this research was to study the extent to which non-native plant species from Cibodas Botanical Garden (CBG) invades into natural rainforest of Mt. Gede Pangrango National Park that adjacent CBG. A line transect was made edge-to-interior with 1600 m in distance from CBG boundary. Result showed that distance from CBG was not significant in correlation with tree and treelet non-native density.… Show more

“…In 1862, during the Dutch colonial era, Cibodas Botanic Gardens were established as experimental fields to introduce alien plants to the Dutch East Indies (i.e., Indonesia; Roemantyo et al 1988). Four of the six unique species in our study (Eupatorium sordidum, C. aurantiacum, Calathea lietzei, and Brugmansia versicolor) are listed as in the collection of Cibodas Botanical Garden (Roemantyo et al 1988), and Zuhri and Mutaqien (2013) also noted that some non-native plant species have spread into GPNP from Cibodas Botanic Garden. As a result, the lower segments of the Cibodas trail had more species than expected based on its high elevation, thus decreasing the correlation coefficient between species number and elevation as a whole (Fig.…”

“…But, there was also a threat from the plants having a high growth rate such as Etilingera coccinea which has the potential as an invasive species as reported in several regions in Indonesia and this needs attention. Etlingera coccinea has a tight rhizome and forms a population that can inhibit other types of growth (Zuhri and Mutaqien 2013;Tjitrosoedirdjo et al 2016).…”

“…(Wahyuni and Tjitrosoedirdjo 2013;Zuhri and Mutaqien 2013;Junaedi 2014; Sutomo et al 2018). Exotic species can threaten as invasive as reported in various regions in Indonesia(Setiawan and Sulistyawati 2008;Wahyuni and Tjitrosoedirdjo 2013;Zuhri and Mutaqien 2013;Tjitrosoedirdjo et al 2016; Sutomo et al 2018), so we need to be aware about this.…”
