“…Molecular markers are subject of investigation: in spite of many studies, the molecular events that induce the development of premalignancies to carcinoma are still unknown, and we are still forced to conclude that over (or under)-expression of biomarkers itself adds little predictive value over standard histology . [ 62 - 66 ] Therefore, until now they are not applicable in clinical practice. [ 67 ]…”

“…The criteria for histological grading were additionally formulated by a Working Group on Head and Neck Pathology of the European Society of Pathology in 1997 [51]. The Ljubljana system nominally recognizes four grades: simple hyperplasia and basal/parabasal cell hyperplasia include mainly benign categories with a minimum risk of malignant alteration; atypical hyperplasia is potentially a malignant lesion; CIS is actually a malignant lesion [50,[57][58][59][60][61]. The main features that differentiate the Ljubljana grading system from other classifications are the distinction between mainly benign (squamous hyperplasia and basal-parabasal hyperplasia) and potentially malignant (atypical hyperplasia) lesions, and the positive separation of CIS from atypical hyperplasia.…”

“…Squamous cell carcinoma is the most common histological type of laryngeal malignancy. It accounts for more than 90 % of laryngeal cancers in most studies (1,2). Most patients are 50 to 75 years of age at presentation.…”
