The Southern Ocean Iron RElease Experiment (SOIREE)—introduction and summary

Abstract: This volume is dedicated to the Southern Ocean Iron RElease Experiment (SOIREE), the "rst in situ iron fertilisation experiment performed in the polar waters of the Southern Ocean. SOIREE was an interdisciplinary study involving participants from six countries, and took place in February 1999 south of the Polar Front in the Australasian-Paci"c sector of the Southern Ocean. Approximately 3800 kg of acidi"ed FeSO . 7H O and 165 g of the tracer sulphur hexa#uoride (SF ) were added to a 65-m deep surface mixed lay… Show more

“…The first mesoscale iron enrichments in the Equatorial Pacific, IRONEX I and II (Coale et al, 1996;Martin et al, 1994), and in the Southern Ocean, SOIREE, (Boyd and Law, 2001), have answered in the affirmative by dramatic demonstration of intense phytoplankton growth after relief of iron limitation. However, there is still much to be learnt from iron enrichment experiments, notably insight into mechanisms of biogeochemical cycling of iron and other nutrients.…”

“…Therefore, except for the single iron addition experiments of IronEx I, SEEDS-1, and FeeP (Martin et al, 1994;Rees et al, 2007), to maintain an iron-fertilized patch, most of the OIF experiments conducted multiple iron additions at the patch centre. These multiple addition experiments included: (2 additions) EIFEX, SERIES, SEEDS-2, LOHAFEX (Boyd et al, 2005;Smetacek 15 et al, 2012;Martin et al, 2013), (3 additions) IronEx-2, EisenEx, SOFeX-N (Coale et al, 1996;Gervais et al, 2002;Coale et al, 2004;Nishioka et al, 2005), and (4 additions) SOIREE, SOFeX-S, SAGE (Boyd and Law, 2001;Coale et al, 2004;Harvey et al, 2010) (Table 1).…”

“…In physically based approaches, surface-drifting buoys equipped with Array for Real-time Geostrophic Oceanography (ARGO) and Global Positioning System (GPS) sensors have been used to map moving fertilized patches in space and time (Coale et al, 1998;Boyd and Law, 2001;Law et al, 2006;Martin et al, 2013). Buoy position can be transmitted to the ship every 5-10 min.…”
