Resumo Este trabalho tem um duplo propósito: por um lado, apresentar a relevância, abrangência e profundidade dos estudos históricos e sociológicos sobre a quantificação; de outro, reconstruir as origens deste campo e as transformações por ele conhecidas ao longo dos últimos anos. Nesse percurso, interessa-nos destacar os vínculos entre os trabalhos que analisaram os processos de raciocinar, valorar, medir e comparar com números e as preocupações clássicas e contemporâneas da sociologia. Com este objetivo, o presente artigo oferece uma ampla revisão da literatura do campo, buscando despertar o interesse da comunidade de cientistas sociais por suas potencialidades heurísticas. Ao mesmo tempo, procura-se compilar as contribuições dos estudos sociais da quantificação à sociologia como um todo. A primeira seção apresenta um relato histórico sobre a formação desta perspectiva de análise, suas principais obras de referência e aportes mais significativos. A segunda seção discute as razões pelas quais entendemos que a sociologia deveria ampliar sua atenção para as operações e os regimes de quantificação nas sociedades contemporâneas. Além disso, examina as contribuições que o campo tem a oferecer para a reflexão sobre as questões nodais da disciplina, como o problema dos fundamentos da ordem social e da autoridade política, os processos de diferenciação social e configuração de subjetividades, a participação social, a crítica e a agência social transformadora.

“…In recent years there has been a tendency toward the consolidation of several traditions of enquiry into the broad eld of the sociology of measurement (Mennicken and Espeland 2019;Diaz-Bone and Didier 2016;Berman and Hirschman 2018). This resulted from the con uence of several scholarly streams, including the tradition of critical analysis of public statistics in France, spearheaded by Alain Desrosières's work on statistics as a tool of governance, and the "economics of conventions approach" (Desrosières 2011; Diaz-Bone 2016); the Bielefeld network of North American and German scholars in the history and philosophy of science with parallel concerns on processes of quanti cation and its impact on social life (Porter 1986;Krüger, Daston, and Heidelberger 1987;Hacking 1990); as well as a broader collection of US-based sociologists in the tradition of symbolic interactionism.…”

protesters occupied a park in New York's nancial district. The Occupy Wall Street movement, spreading over many cities and several countries over that winter, made inequality its banner and did much to bring the issue to the foreground of public debate. Through a sophisticated combination of age-old protest tactics and social media use, Occupy denounced the injustice of the accumulation of riches and power by a small and unaccountable elite. In that sense, the object of the protests was not novel, but the way it was framed-the 99 versus the 1 percentwas (Gould-Wartofsky 2015; Ramos Pinto 2019).This highly successful slogan is derived from an abstract form of quanti cation of the distribution of incomes, produced by professional economists and statisticians through techniques that are opaque to nonexperts.

Die Kommunikations- und Medienwissenschaft sowie benachbarte Disziplinen fragen zunehmend danach, wie soziales Handeln durch Daten bzw. digitale Spuren gemessen, ausgewertet und repräsentiert wird. Es gibt jedoch nur wenige Analysen dazu, wie die Kommunikations- und Medienforschung selbst in unterschiedlichen Formen solche nicht-wissenschaftlichen Nutzungsdaten verwendet. Dieser Beitrag zeigt, dass Nutzungsdaten von Technologie-, Daten-, Marktforschungs- und Medienunternehmen vielfach mit starker Intransparenz verbunden sind und von der Forschung oft nicht ausreichend hinterfragt und kontextualisiert werden. Über die Aussagekaft der verschiedenen Metriken und Rankings wird zu wenig kritisch diskutiert und auch die mit ihnen verfolgten kommerziellen Interessen und Strategien werden selten in den Blick genommen. Die vorliegende Analyse identifiziert und diskutiert fünf problematische Umgangsweisen mit nicht-wissenschaftlichen Nutzungsdaten: A) Mangelnde Einordnung der Aussagekraft von Nutzungsmetriken und -rankings, B) Mangelnde Einordnung von Rankings als strategische Unternehmensinstrumente, C) Unbegründete Inferenz von Nutzungsdaten auf Makro-Phänomene, D) Unkritische Übernahme von interessengeleiteten Superlativen und Generalisierungen und E) Verwendung von geschätzten Zahlen als gemessene Daten. Die Analyse dieser Problematiken wirft einen kritischen Blick auf die Kommunikations- und Medienforschung, die zum Teil mangelnde Sicherung von wissenschaftlicher Qualität und jüngste Entwicklungen im Wissenschaftssystem. Sie eröffnet zudem neue Fragen und Perspektiven, mit denen die Kommunikations- und Medienforschung einen wichtigen Beitrag leisten kann. Denn gerade in Gesellschaften, in denen Nutzungszahlen und -rankings omnipräsent sind und mächtige Unternehmen den Datenzugang weitgehend kontrollieren, ist ein kritischer Blick auf Nutzungsdaten unverzichtbar.
