Political polarization, fueled by conflicting meta-perceptions, presents a critical obstacle to constructive discourse and collaboration. These meta-perceptions-how one group perceives another group's views of them-are often inaccurate and can lead to detrimental outcomes such as increased hostility and dehumanization. Across two studies, we introduce and experimentally test a novel approach that exposes participants to atypical, counter-stereotypical members of an opposing group who either confirm or disrupt their existing meta-perceptions. We find that disrupting meta-perceptions decreases dehumanization of the partner, increases interest in wanting to learn more about them, but fails to increase willingness to interact in the future with the partner. We conduct an exploratory text analysis to uncover differences in word choice by condition. Our research adds a new dimension to the existing body of work by examining the efficacy of alternative intervention strategies to improve intergroup relations in politically polarized settings.

Although attitudinal conflict is a pervasive aspect of everyday decision-making, little is known about the temporal dynamics that characterize how people experience and resolve such conflict. The present research investigated attitudinal conflict by adopting a temporal framework of conflict emergence and resolution. We conducted a preregistered experience sampling study in the domain of meat consumption and employed a novel integrated sampling approach (of a total of 18,586 observations from 462 participants), achieving precise temporal resolution throughout the entire course of natural decision-making processes in daily life. The data revealed an episodic structure of attitudinal conflict, highlighting a complex trajectory across multiple phases. Especially when people engaged in decision-making, the cognitive accessibility of evaluative inconsistency (i.e., attitudinal ambivalence) elicited conflict. Although these experiences emerged situationally, they tended to fade gradually. People downregulated attitudinal conflict more strongly when they ate meat despite previously evaluating it negatively (i.e., cognitive dissonance). However, this decline was only temporary, and the conflict resurged. Furthermore, people engaged in dissonance reduction by initially denying responsibility for eating meat and subsequently aligning their attitudes. The findings elucidate the situational dynamics and sequential processes underlying how people struggle with conflicted choices and rationalize them in everyday life. Furthermore, given that our sampling method offers fine-grained insights into the entire decision-making process, it can be applied to various research questions and applications, such as to inform the optimal timing of behavior change campaigns.

IntroductionMoral courage manifests in acts intended to intervene to stop or redress witnessed moral norm violations, despite the risk of negative consequences for the intervener. We investigate moral courage in everyday life and ask what personality processes are involved. Based on an extended process model of moral courage, we derived hypotheses on cognitive and emotional processes that should facilitate or hinder intervention. Further, we identified candidate personality dispositions that should shape these processes and thereby predict who tends to intervene against others' norm violations and who does not.MethodsUsing a quota‐based sample of the German population (N = 1108), we conducted a personality assessment, followed by a 7‐day experience sampling during which participants reported norm violations witnessed in their daily life as well as their cognitive, emotional, and behavioral reactions.ResultsIn total, 678 participants reported 1965 norm violations and intervened against 32% of them. Dispositional self‐efficacy facilitated intervention by increasing a sense of efficacy when confronted with others' norm violations. Conversely, dispositional moral disengagement hindered intervention by reducing perceived own responsibility.DiscussionOur findings provide novel insights into the situations affording moral courage in everyday life, and the personality processes that uniquely guide this behavior.
