Social innovation (SI) is a potential solution to various problems and challenges in the agriculture sector. Agri-tech start-ups can be considered important agents for developing SI in the sector. In Indonesia, agri-tech start-ups are also expected to develop SI for sustainable agricultural development in the medium-term national development plan 2020–2024. Using multiple case studies, this paper attempts to complement the currently available literature and deepen the knowledge regarding the differences between SI and traditional innovation. This research also discusses the role of business organizations, represented by agri-tech start-ups, in developing SI, by observing the diffusion model and innovation-decision process. This research identifies characteristics of SI theoretically complemented with empirical description. Three models of diffusion leading to different types of innovation-decision processes and communication channels are identified. Several internal and external factors are influencing the diffusion process. In the process, the start-ups also hold bridging roles that vary according to company characteristics. Practical implications regarding successful SI development are provided.

The attention to the phenomenon of social entrepreneurship has been especially enhanced during the current turbulent times, as social enterprises have a key role to play in solving social problems caused by the pandemic. Currently, social entrepreneurship is still an undeveloped area in Georgia, but it has the potential to contribute to the country’s economy and improve the social, ecological, and economic conditions of society. This paper analyses the concept in Georgia and explores social entrepreneurship from the social entrepreneurs’ perspective. A qualitative interview method was applied to collect the data for this study, and semi-structured interviews were conducted with the seventeen Georgian social entrepreneurs from May–June 2021. The research reveals the drivers of social entrepreneurs and investigates the financial sources of social enterprises. It also discusses the practice of social entrepreneurship in terms of preventing and supportive factors while adopting the concept in transition economies, particularly in Georgia. The research demonstrated an urgent need for legislation to regulate the field of social entrepreneurship and formalize it.

Social entrepreneurship is an important area of research when it comes to considering the role of business in society and how entrepreneurs solve social problems. The concept has spread not only in developing, but also in developed countries. The recent Covid-19 pandemic has demonstrated that crises can be addressed with entrepreneurial innovation and creativity. This paper attempts to outline a way for social enterprises to overcome the current pandemic crisis, as well as to emphasize the challenges and opportunities the crisis presents social entrepreneurs with. This paper discusses how social enterprises in Georgia have been affected and strategies that have been applied. In order to achieve the research goal, relevant literature has been analyzed and systematized. The qualitative research method has been applied to answer the study questions. The paper concludes with an interpretation of the results and highlights implications for theory and practice. This study finds that Georgian social enterprises are negatively affected by the pandemic crisis due to increased operational costs, interruption of business processes, sales decline, customer loss, and supply chain disruptions. Social enterprises responded to the challenges by changing strategies, re-allocating resources, diversifying funding sources, intensifying communication efforts, introducing new technologies, and moving online. However, government support is essential for Georgian social enterprises to survive and grow. Finally, directions for future research are also proposed.
