The Internet of Things (IoT) is significantly transforming the maritime industry, enabling the generation of vast amounts of data that can drive operational efficiency, safety, and sustainability. This review explores the role and potential of data analysis in maritime IoT applications. Through a series of case studies, it demonstrates the real-world impact of data analysis, from predictive maintenance to efficient port operations, improved navigation safety, and environmental compliance. The review also discusses the benefits and limitations of data analysis and highlights emerging trends and future directions in the field, including the growing application of AI and Machine Learning techniques. Despite the promising opportunities, several challenges, including data quality, complexity, security, cost, and interoperability, need to be addressed to fully harness the potential of data analysis in maritime IoT. As the industry continues to embrace IoT and data analysis, it becomes critical to focus on overcoming these challenges and capitalizing on the opportunities to improve maritime operations.

Communication systems and networks are evolving as an integral part of not only of our everyday life but also as a part of the industry, fundamental infrastructures, companies, etc. Current directions and concepts, such as the Internet of Things (IoT), promise enhanced quality of life, greater business opportunities, cost-effective manufacturing, and efficient operation management through ubiquitous connectivity and deployment of smart physical objects. IoT networks are able to collect, preprocess, and transmit a huge amount of data. A considerable portion of this data is security-and privacycritical data, which makes IoT networks a tempting option for attackers. Given that these networks deal with the actual aspects of our lives and fundamental infrastructures (e.g. smart grids), cybersecurity in such networks is crucial. The large scale of these networks and their unique characteristics and complexity bring further vulnerabilities. In this study we give an introduction to IoT, focusing on the IoT application layer, security requirements, threats, and countermeasures in this layer, and some of the open issues and future research lines.

"The study is focused on the exploitation and dissemination activities for the sustainability of the MSc program on Smart Maritime & Surveying Systems within the Surveying & MARiTime internet of thingS EducAtion (SMARTSEA) project. A key factor for success is to ensure that the results and achievements of the project are made widely available to its target audience comprised of students, industrial partners, academic & market business and scientific community. As a unique European pilot-project funded by the European Union’s Erasmus+ Programme Knowledge Alliances, SMARTSEA aimed to develop an advanced interactive certified MSc course related to Maritime & Surveyor IoT applications that will train individuals with the necessary skills & knowledge to work in the rising “Smart Maritime & Surveying” industry. To reach its target audiences according to its expected impacts, an effective communication strategy was developed, based on project-specific dissemination and communication activities. This approach will provide an overview of the resources needed to accomplish the exploitation and dissemination objectives throughout the project lifecycle, while creating guidelines for future development and exploitation."
