The SmartOR: a distributed sensor network to improve operating room efficiency

Abstract: The SmartOR automatically and reliably captures data on OR room state and, in real time, identifies outlier cases that may be examined closer to improve efficiency. As no manual entry is required, the data are indisputable and allow OR teams to maintain a patient-centric focus.

“…The importance of a notification can be different according to the moment: the board will notify the staff in a more invasive way that an OR is not ready to receive a patient right before this patient should actually enter the OR rather than an hour before. While we have sufficient user feedback and measurements [21][22][23][24] to claim that our system has the potential to improve the first two goals, we still have to incorporate the patient in our study. Patients' and families' engagement is a transformative force in the health industry, and insurance policy in the United States now has a component strictly dependent upon patient satisfaction that will keep growing in importance in the near future [32].…”

“…To expand the study, this simplified air quality model was then coupled to the ABM of surgical flow that reproduces the daily activity of a large surgical suite over a long period of time [30]. The model was calibrated using custom-made sensor systems placed at key locations of the surgical suite to capture the daily activity over a period of a year [28]. This OR suite, dedicated to general surgery, has about 20 ORs distributed in a layout as seen in Figure 13 and is rather typical of the activity in a large urban hospital.…”
