The explosive growth of various services boosts the innovation and development in terrestrial communication systems for the implementation of the next generation mobile communication networks. However, simply utilizing limited resources in terrestrial communication networks is difficult to support the massive quality of service (QoS) aware requirements and it is hard to guarantee seamless coverage in far remote regions. Leveraging the intrinsic merits of high altitude and the ability of multicasting or broadcasting, satellite communication systems provide an opportunity for novel mobile communication networks with its tight interaction and complementary characteristics to traditional terrestrial networks. It is believed that the convergence of satellite and terrestrial networks can solve the problems existing in current mobile communication systems and make a profound effect on global information dissemination. In this paper, we make a comprehensive survey on the convergence of satellite and terrestrial networks. First, motivations and requirements of satellite-terrestrial network convergence are identified. Then, we summarize related architectures of existing literature, classify the taxonomy of researches on satellite-terrestrial networks, and present the performance evaluation works in different satellite-terrestrial networks. After that, the state-ofthe-art of standardization, projects and the key application areas of satellite-terrestrial networks are also reviewed. Finally, we conclude the survey by highlighting the open issues and future directions.

Abstract. Ground-based microwave radiometer (MWR) observations of downwelling brightness temperature (TB) are commonly used to estimate the atmospheric attenuation at relative transparent channels for radiopropagation and telecommunication purposes. The atmospheric attenuation is derived from TB by inverting the radiative transfer equation with a priori knowledge of the mean radiating temperature (TMR). TMR is usually estimated by either time-variant site climatology (e.g., monthly average computed from atmospheric thermodynamical profiles) or condition-variant estimation from surface meteorological sensors. However, information on TMR may also be extracted directly from MWR measurements at other channels than those used to estimate atmospheric attenuation. This paper proposes a novel approach to estimate TMR in clear and cloudy sky from independent MWR profiler measurements. A linear regression algorithm is trained with a simulated dataset obtained by processing one year of radiosonde observations of atmospheric thermodynamic profiles. The algorithm is trained to estimate TMR at K-, and V/W-band frequencies (22–31 and 72–82 GHz, respectively) from independent MWR observations at V-band (54–58 GHz). The retrieval coefficients are then applied to a one-year dataset of real V-band observations, and the estimated TMR at K- and V/W-band are compared with estimates from nearly collocated and simultaneous radiosondes. The proposed method provides TMR estimates in better agreement with radiosondes than a traditional method, with 32–38 % improvement depending on frequency. This maps into an expected improvement in atmospheric attenuation of 10–20 % for K-band and ~ 30 % for V/W-band channels.

The improvements in electrical characteristics of AlGaN/GaN high electron mobility transistors (HEMTs) grown using metalorganic (MO)CVD by engineering structure, barrier strain, and unintentional carbon incorporation, are demonstrated in this work. Both normal HEMT structure (with a high temperature (HT) AlN buffer) and advanced HEMT structure (with a highlow-high temperature (HLHT) AlN buffer, and a HT AlN interlayer (IL)) present a breakdown voltage higher than 200 V, while a much smaller breakdown voltage of 17 V is measured on the conventional structure using a low-temperature GaN buffer. The HT AlN IL inserted in the middle of the conventional HEMT structure introduces a reduction in the tension of the AlGaN barrier, which results in an improvement of the surface morphology (0.46 nm). As a consequence, the two-dimensional electron gas (2DEG) mobility increases by remarkable 46% (1900 cm 2 V À1 s À1 ). The HLHT AlN buffer, substituting for the HT AlN buffer, leads to the enhancement of GaN crystalline quality, which contributes to the performance improvement for HEMTs. The advanced HEMT, using both an AlN IL and an HLHT AlN buffer, produces increases in the DC maximum drain current by 35.5% ($680 A mm À1 ), and in the transconductance by 15% (114 mS mm À1 ) in comparison with the normal HEMT with an AlN buffer. The very low leakage current in the advanced HEMTs is caused by optimizing the design of the buffer and modifying growth parameters. Lastly, the reduction of AlGaN barrier tensile strain by inserting the HT AlN IL is promising for an improvement in AlGaN/GaN HEMT reliability.
