The single Marchantia polymorpha FERONIA homolog reveals an ancestral role in regulating cellular expansion and integrity

Abstract: Plant cells are surrounded by a cell wall, a rigid structure that is not only important for cell and organ shape, but crucial for intercellular communication and interactions with the environment. In the flowering plant Arabidopsis thaliana, the 17 members of the Catharanthus roseus RLK1-like (CrRLK1L) receptor kinase family are involved in a multitude of physiological and developmental processes, making it difficult to assess their primary or ancestral function. To reduce genetic complexity, we characterized … Show more

“…The Marchantia polymorpha genome encodes three RALF peptides ( Bowman et al., 2017 ). The single CrRLK1L gene of Marchantia polymorpha (MpFER) was recently characterized ( Mecchia et al., 2022 ). Defects in vegetative growth and decreased male fertility characterize plants with reduced MpFER levels.…”

“…In the plant model Arabidopsis , the CrRLK1L subfamily contains 17 members, many of which have been characterized, e.g., THESEUS1 (THE1), HERCULES1 (HERK1), HERCULES2 (HERK2), FERONIA/SIRENE (FER/SIR), ANXUR1 (ANX1), ANXUR2 (ANX2), etc. and among these characterized members, FER and THE have attracted particular interest, owing to their special roles in CWI signaling [ 14 , 132 , 133 ]. CrRLK1Ls have been reviewed many times [ 7 , 10 , 14 , 15 , 23 ].…”

“…ruderalis subspecies (Figure 2c, Table S6). Among them, we identified the Receptor-Like Kinase (RLK) protein of the CrRLKL1L-1 family MpFERONIA/MpTHESEUS crucial for Marchantia and angiosperm development (Table S5) [27][28][29] , the DNA repair proteins Dmc1/Rad51/RecA that are essential for meiotic recombination and highly conserved in eukaryotes 30 , and the Histone-fold Hap3/NF-YB family protein 31 .…”
