The shape control of a composite beam with embedded shape memory alloy wire actuators

Abstract: In this study, the results of experimental and analytical study on shape control of a composite beam with embedded shape memory alloy wire actuators are presented. The effects of the reactive moment of the SMA wire actuators on the shape control test are observed in detail. In shape control of a flexible composite structure, the reactive moment by SMA wire actuators can alter the deformed shape of composite beams which are subjected to external and thermal loads. The results obtained from the shape control tes… Show more

“…Shape memory alloy can be used in shape control due to its high recovery forces and large displacement (Choi and Lee 1998;Oh et al 2001;Yang et al 2006). In the experimental and analytical studies carried out by Choi and Lee, it was shown that the SMA actuators were able to modify the deformed shape of composite (Oh et al 2001).…”

“…Song and Agrawal [2] used a robust closed-loop controller to actively control the beam tip displacement for active shape control of SMA wire-embedded composite beam. While Choi and Lee [1] used a regular glass epoxy composite for embedding the SMA wires, Song et al [2] used a composite beam which had an Aluminum honey comb core with a glass fiber reinforced polymer composite backing plate and with a low-modulus elastomeric top plate attached to the honey comb core. Wen and Lagoudas [3] observed that if the SMA wires are externally attached to a beam then larger deformation can be achieved, as compared to the case of embedded SMA wires.…”

“…Aboudi [10] developed a microstructural model that encompasses both local and global effects, to analyze the behavior of resin-matrix and metal-matrix composites with embedded shape memory alloy (SMA) fibers. Choi and Lee [11] performed analytical and experimental studies on shape control of glass/epoxy composite beams with embedded SMA wire actuators. Song et al [12] investigated active position control of honeycomb-type composite beams with SMA wires embedded in one of the face sheets.…”
