The seroepidemiology of infection due to Epstein‐Barr virus in southern India

Abstract: We investigated the seroepidemiology of infection due to Epstein-Barr virus (EBV) in 181 south Indian subjects aged 0-25 years using the indirect immunofluorescence method to titrate antibodies to viral capsid antigen (VCA), nuclear antigen (EBNA), and early antigen (EA). The age-specific prevalence of IgG antibodies to VCA rose rapidly to 90% by the age of 5 years. The prevalence of VCA-specific IgM and the geometric mean titre of VCA-specific IgG antibodies were highest between the ages of 6 months and 2 yea… Show more

“…Virus-specific serology strongly suggests that the vast majority o f children experienced a primary infection before 10 years. Our data are in agreement with other epidemiological reports conducted on low or middle socioeconomic groups from several countries, in which a very high rate o f EBV immunity was already present in early childhood (1,2,3,16,17,18). The IgM responses were less frequent (0.90/0) in accordance with findings obtained by other investigators.…”

“…Interestingly, our results show that the incidence of EBV early in childhood is significantly higher as compared to HHV-8. A very similar seroprevalence rate has been reported for EBV in some Asian countries such as India, where Venkitaraman et al have reported that IgG antibodies to VCA rose rapidly to 90% by 5 years of age [11]. The prevalence of VCA-specific IgM and the geometric mean titer of VCA-specific IgG antibodies were highest between the ages of 6 months and 2 years, the median age of primary infection being 1.4 years.…”

“…In southern India, more than 90% of children had IgG antibodies to EBV-VCA by the age of 5 years [Venkitaraman et al, 1985]. The age-specific seroprevalence of anti-EBV antibodies in the population of India is similar to those from areas where EBVassociated Burkitt's lymphoma is endemic.…”
