The Seasonality and Ecology of the Anopheles gambiae complex (Dipetra: Culicidae) in Liberia Using Molecular Identification

Abstract: Members of the Anopheles gambiae sensu lato (Giles) complex define a group of seven morphologically indistinguishable species, including the principal malaria vectors in Sub-Saharan Africa. Members of this complex differ in behavior and ability to transmit malaria; hence, precise identification of member species is critical to monitoring and evaluating malaria threat levels. We collected mosquitoes from five counties in Liberia every other month from May 2011 until May 2012, using various trapping techniques. … Show more

“…Interestingly, earlier studies in similar ecologies that were conducted during dry periods of the year when temperatures are high alluded to the dominance of An. coluzzii among adult Anopheles mosquitoes [ 45 , 46 ]. Under high temperature conditions, adult An.…”

“…Many types of molecular techniques have been used to identify insect species, including restriction fragment length polymorphism (RFLP), amplified fragment length polymorphism (AFLP), random amplified polymorphic DNA (RAPD), single-strand conformation polymorphism (SSCP), DNA sequence analysis, and species-specific primer PCR (SS-PCR) methods 9 10 11 12 . Among these techniques, species-specific primer PCR is a popular technology for species identification due to its high accuracy, sensitivity and convenience 13 .…”
