The SCRIT electron scattering facility project at RIKEN RI beam factory

Abstract: The SCRIT electron scattering facility has been constructed at the RIKEN RI Beam Factory. The commissioning experiment was performed and the properties of the ion trapping were studied. The first electron elastic scattering experiment of 132 Xe was performed and the charge density distribution was obtained. The achieved luminosity in the experiment was 1.8 × 10 27 cm −2 s −1 with a 250 mA electron beam current and the injection of 10 8 ions. The production of unstable nuclei has been started with a new online … Show more

“…Elastic electron (and muon) scattering off nuclei is a model independent technique to investigate the size and shape of stable nuclei [159,16,160] and unstable nuclei [161,162,163]. This is because electrons interact via the electroweak interaction with the nucleons.…”

“…Both quantities together are essential to properly reproduce the experimental charge rms radius. Theoretical studies on elastic electron scattering by exotic nuclei [164,165,166,167,163] have recently been fostered by projects such as SCRIT [161] or ELISe [162].…”

“…This work demonstrates that the SCRIT technique enables up to perform electron scattering experiment for determination of nuclear charge density distribution even for small amount of isotopes provided by conventional ISOL system. RI production for experiments on unstable nuclei has already started [25]. Electron scattering off short-lived unstable nuclei will be realized in the near future.…”

“…This experiment verifies that the SCRIT technique enables us to perform electron scattering and extract the nuclear charge density distribution even for the small amount of isotopes provided by a conventional isotope separation on line system. Radioactive isotope production for experiments on unstable nuclei has already started [22] and electron scattering from short-lived unstable nuclei will be realized in the near future.…”
