The Scientists' View of Statistics--A Neglected Area

Abstract: Scientists who wish to usestatistics as a tool in their research requirea logical and consistent foundation for statistics. That foundation is shown to be different from the mathematical basis required by statisticians. The complex and challenging task of developing statistics from the perspective of the scientific user is discussed. Problems which demand more detailed attention from the statistical community are highlighted.

“…But in practice, if the sample is very large, a good orthodox statistician will 'deflate' intuitively the level of significance P accordingly." McPherson (1989) comments on this: "This is very likely true, but it is an inadequate base for presenting the p value approach to scientists. "…”

“…El análisis de datos, en cualquiera de sus filosofías y modalidades, es el instrumento adecuado para su valoración con el objetivo de identificar "estructuras subyacentes" en las grandes masas de datos (Deville y Malinvaud, 1983;Bradshaw y Phillips, 1992), y de comprobar su calidad para detectar posibles errores (McPherson, 1989).…”

“…This paper will focus on the teaching and learning processes associated with the statistical treatment of data from questionnaires and rating scales. The link between the teaching and learning processes is the inter-professional communication based on a mutual understanding of the problems from both the applied science and statistical perspective (McPherson, 1989;Altman, 1991;Greenfield, 1993).…”

“…The published comments to his paper, given by several statisticians, illustrate the various opinions that are prevalent concerning the importance of theories of measurements. Clearly, the impact of the measurement process on the correct choice of statistical analysis must be considered for each study (McPherson, 1989;Altman, 1991;Svensson, 1998a).…”
