The Scientific Impact of Developing Nations

Abstract: This paper analyzes science productivity for nine developing countries. Results show that these nations are reducing their science gap, with R&D investments and scientific impact growing at more than double the rate of the developed world. But this “catching up” hides a very uneven picture among these nations, especially on what they are able to generate in terms of impact and output relative to their levels of investment and available resources. Moreover, unlike what one might expect, it is clear that the siz… Show more

“…This may take the form of increased funding for strategically important research areas (Clark, ; Collins et al, ). Luck may also play a role through the success of international competitors and collaborating nations (Gonzalez‐Brambila, Reyes‐Gonzalez, Veloso, & Perez‐Angón, ; Tahamtan, Afshar, & Ahamdzadeh, ), as well as chance factors within a country (Simonton, ), such as major scientific breakthroughs or the emergence of individual prominent scientists (e.g., Cypriot economics Nobel laureate Christopher A. “…Jedan od ciljeva u Nacionalnoj strategiji Republike Srbije je obezbeđivanje relevantnosti naučnih istraživanja za potrebe industrije. Trenutno su istraživanja u Srbiji, kao i u nekim drugim i, posebno, zemljama u razvoju [3], najvećim delom okrenuta ka produkciji naučnih publikacija. Patentne prijave i nova tehnička rešenja su činila svega 3,3 % od ukupnih naučnih rezultata u Srbiji u prethodnom periodu od 2011-2015 godine [1].…”
