The Science of Vascular Contributions to Cognitive Impairment and Dementia (VCID): A Framework for Advancing Research Priorities in the Cerebrovascular Biology of Cognitive Decline

Abstract: The World Health Organization reports that 47.5 million people are affected by dementia worldwide. With aging populations and 7.7 million new cases each year, the burden of illness due to dementia approaches crisis proportions. Despite significant advances in our understanding of the biology of Alzheimer’s disease, the leading dementia diagnosis, the actual causes of dementia in affected individuals are unknown except for rare fully penetrant genetic forms. Evidence from epidemiology and pathology studies indi… Show more

“…This has further led to the usage of the general terms, for example, VCI or VCID, in order to include all cognitive impairments caused by cerebrovascular abnormalities, which could be quite confusing. Essentially, VCI or VCID is used to include a diverse heterogeneous group of cognitive syndromes with vascular origins regardless of the cause of pathogenesis, ranging from mild cognitive impairment to full-blown dementia, and VaD is the most severe stage [3, 8, 18]. The heterogeneity and complexity of VCI however make it difficult for appropriate clinical characterization.…”

“…Vascular cognitive impairment dementia (VCID) is the term suggested for all forms of dementia related to vascular diseas (Corriveau et al, 2016). The term includes multiple forms of stroke, which can be separated into large vessel and small vessel disease (SVD).…”

“…Vascular contributions to cognitive impairment and dementia (VCID) in aging have garnered much interest in the past decade (Corriveau et al 2016;Csiszar et al 2017;Gorelick et al 2011;Snyder et al 2015;Toth et al 2017;Tucsek et al 2017). There are numerous agerelated vascular pathologies underlying VCID.…”
