The school Lifesavers study—A randomised controlled trial comparing the impact of Lifesaver only, face-to-face training only, and Lifesaver with face-to-face training on CPR knowledge, skills and attitudes in UK school children

Abstract: Use of Lifesaver by school children, compared to F2F training alone, can lead to comparable learning outcomes for several key elements of successful CPR. Its use can be considered where resources or time do not permit formal F2F training sessions. The true benefits of Lifesaver can be realised if paired with F2F training.

“…17 18 The McNemar's test was used in a post hoc analysis of the OSCE passing rate over time in students who played the 'Lifesaver' game. 8 The school intraclass correlation was estimated after performing a mixed-effects logistic regression for OSCE skills. SPSS V.24.0 (IBM) software and Stata V.16.0 (StataCorp, College Station, TX) were used for data analyses.…”

“…At the 3-month follow-up, our students maintained a high level of BLS skills with shorter median time to first shock. A possible explanation is that students refreshed their training before the follow-up, with some playing the 'Lifesaver' game 8 and others remembering the examiner's feedback for improvements after the first OSCE performance. Our knowledge and skill results are also consistent with the findings in a systematic review of a wide range of BLS programmes in schoolchildren.…”

“…The participants were questioned regarding CPR awareness, knowledge, and willingness, and the status of CPR education. Among the questions about CPR knowledge, hand position, rate, and depth in chest compressions were included, as those questions were included in both surveys and three elements are commonly asked in other studies assessing CPR knowledge of general public[1819]. Moreover, we also considered the possible barriers to perform bystander CPR and whether the interviewee was familiar with the current Korean Good Samaritans’ Law.…”
