The S-train system: Synchronized express & local trains for urban commuter rail systems

Abstract: Current urban commuter rail systems, especially subway systems, are not optimized to convey passengers at fast travel time, resulting in passenger crowding, delays, and congestion. Synchronous operation of express and local trains is desired to improve the systems. We propose the synchronized express and local system, the S-train System, to optimize urban commuter rail systems by minimizing passenger travel time and transfer delays at stations. The proposed S-train optimal commuter rail system optimizes traffi… Show more

“…Therefore, the choice of overtaking points is critical for express and slow trains. Chun et al [21] studied urban commuter lines and pointed out that express trains should be synchronized with ordinary trains to improve the system to minimize travel time and station transfer delays. Hao et al [22] studied the express and slow train operation scheme, established a multi-objective optimization model based on travel time and operating cost and conducted an empirical study on the Shenzhen Metro Line 14.…”

“…It is crucial to determine which stations to stop at or skip in express/local services. Chun et al [4] proposed a synchronized express and local system implemented to optimize the urban transit system by reducing passengers' waiting times and transfers. Gao et al [1] analyzed the relationship between the energy consumption and passenger waiting time in the operation of express and local services and formulated a biobjective model.…”

“…Hassannayebi E et al [5] studied the optimal time table of express/local train and built up a model in order to reduce the passenger waiting time by using variance and penalty function. Chun J H et al [6] come up with the express/local train mode, which can solve the problem of passenger crowding and train delay with building the model of minimizing the number of serviceable cars. Y Lai et al [7] took transfer passengers into account and then established an innovative network structure to study the train stop plan.…”
