The role of the surface environment in healthcare-associated infections

Abstract: Hospital surfaces are frequently contaminated with important healthcare-associated pathogens. Contact with the contaminated environment by healthcare personnel is equally as likely as direct contact with a patient to lead to contamination of the healthcare provider's hands or gloves that may result in patient-to-patient transmission of nosocomial pathogens. Admission to a room previously occupied by a patient with MRSA, VRE, Acinetobacter, or C. difficile increases the risk for the subsequent patient admitted … Show more

“…has an increased likelihood of developing colonization or infection with that pathogen due to inadequate decontamination of surfaces. 5,[327][328][329] In healthcare facilities that deliver care to people with CF, contamination of dry environmental surfaces with CF pathogens was low, but contamination of the hands of people with CF was higher. 128 In a Liverpool CF center, contamination of inanimate surfaces was transient and negative after patient discharge and routine cleaning.…”

“…We also showed a disinfection process for specific microorganisms, where protocols aimed at minimizing or even eliminating bacteria such as Clostridium difficile [17,23], methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus [17][18][19]25] vancomycin-resistant Enterococcus [17,22] of which are often associated with hospital infections, with increased environmental resistance, have a more reserved prognosis and a difficult treatment [2,3].…”

“…Studies indicate that the hospital environment plays an important role in the transmission of several pathogens, including methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus, Vancomycin-resistant Enterococcus faecalis, Clostridium difficile, Acinetobacter baumannii, among other important agents causing human infections [2,3]. In addition, agents that cause hospital infections are related to resistance to antibacterial treatments, resulting in higher mortality rates associated with hospital infections [4][5][6].…”

“…The presence of Acinetobacter baumannii, Bacillus spp., Escherichia coli and Staphylococcus aureus in various units reflects hygiene inadequacies in the hospital. Thus, improvements to the cleaning practices and disinfection of hospital surfaces are essential (Weber et al, 2013). Use of 1% hypochlorite is recommended for this purpose (Subbalakshmi, 2018).…”
