The role of surface and extracellular phosphatases in the phosphorus requirement of Ochromonas1

Abstract: Acid and alkaline phosphomonoesterase ( PME ) activity of phosphorus-depleted Ochromona.s danica could be partially but not completely repressed by exogenous inorganic phosphate ( Pi). Acid and alkaline PME activities were found in the plasma membrane as well as the cytosol and acid PME was secreted in the cell's environment. The extracellular and surface PME could provide the necessary phosphate for the growth of phosphorus-depleted algae in the presence of organic phosphates; specific organic phosphates, gluc… Show more

“…has been cited as a means by which the phytoplankton may utilize soluble organic P (Kuenzlcr and Perras 1965; Aaronson and Patni 1976), although it is unclear to what extent naturally occurring forms of organic P are hydrolyzable (Herbes 1975).…”

“…On the one hand, orthophosphate dissolved in water competes with substrates, leading to an inhibition of the activity (Pettersson, 1980). On the other hand, intracellular orthophosphate regulates this activity: in most microbial and algal systems, P depletion of the cells leads to the synthesis of alkaline phosphatases (Aaronson & Patni, 1976). Previous studies demonstrated contrasting results relative to this sensitivity to phosphate.…”
