The role of sulphur in detoxication of cadmium in young sugar beet plants

Abstract: In young sugar beet plants cadmium suppressed the activity of nitrate reductase, glutamine synthetase and glutamate dehydrogenase, whereas sulphur exhibited a protective role towards activity of these enzymes, except of glutamine synthetase. Protein synthesis was suppressed in the absence of S in nutrient medium; the lowest level was at 10 -3 M Cd 2+. Chloroplast pigment contents were increased by S while Cd 2+, even in the lowest concentration, (10 -5 M) showed a repressive effect. The highest concentrations … Show more

“…The effect showed a decrease in the order of Cd b Pb b Ni b Mo. The presence of Cd in the medium inhibited strongly (about 78%) the GS activity in young pea plants, whereas a total inhibition of this enzyme was noticed in the young sugar beet plants (31). With rice, the presence of Cu, mercury (Hg), Cd, Zn, Ni, and iron (Fe) resulted in a speci®c inhibition of GS (32).…”

“…The importance of S nutrition on plant metabolism has received great attention (Hawkesford, 2000), but little research has so far focused on inter- actions between sulphur availability and Cd exposure (Popovic et al, 1996;Nocito et al, 2002).…”

“…The induction of production of thiol compounds and transcripts for enzymes involved in sulphur assimilation in Arabidopsis under Cd stress has been reported (Haroda et al 2002). The alleviation of Cd toxicity by sulphur has been reported (Popovic et al 1996, Chen and Huerta 1997, Anjana et al 2006. Adequate sulphur helps in detoxification of Cd through the formation of Cd-binding peptides (Rauser 1990, Wang andEvangelou 1995) and synthesis of glutathione, which is an essential component of cellular antioxidative defence system keeping AOS under control (Noctor and Foyer 1998).…”
