The role of socio‐economic material stocks for natural resource use in the United States of America from 1870 to 2100

Abstract: Globally, more than half of all extracted materials are used to build and maintain material stocks. The United States of America (USA) is one of the largest global consumers of these materials. To assess the role of stocks for long‐term material use in an affluent industrialized economy, we present an analysis of material use and stock accumulation for the USA from 1870 to 2100. On the basis of the dynamics of stocks and resulting end‐of‐life (EoL) outflows, we investigate stock‐building material demand, waste… Show more

“…Industry shipment data were mostly used without further manipulation. Only for cases in which it was clear that system boundaries required adjustment to calculate end-uses, we applied the following operations (see Table 2): when shipments did not include trade in final products, we added UN Comtrade data derived from Streeck et al (2021); and, when shipments referred to crude materials, for which substantial processing losses during manufacturing to final products could be expected, we subtracted processing losses as specified in the WIO-MFA yield matrices (see Supporting Information S1 S.1.2.4 and GitHub). The end-use of industry shipments was inferred by shipment destination label (e.g., "construction").…”

“…Because data quality and coverage are generally very low for bricks, only data rows for countries reporting >10 datapoints were included. In addition to that, data from scientific literature and country-specific reports were used to compile time series for the UK [112] , the USA [111] , Japan [87] , Austria [70] , China [126] and India [ 37 , 42 , 110 ].…”

“…We derived this average yield factor by calculating input-output-ratios of plastic feedstocks to plastic raw products by combining process efficiencies from steam cracking and polymerization processes [77] and weighted these by 2015 global production shares of plastics raw products [47] . Thereafter, we combined this dataset with several time series from UNICPS and some additional data on national plastics production [ 2 , 39 , 64 , 99 , 100 , 106 , 111 ].…”

“…Simulation models of socio-economic metabolisms (SEM) are increasingly used to address questions regarding environmental issues. For example, SEM models have been used to gain insights into the relationships between greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions and energy and material flows and stocks, through scenarios exploring circular economy and climate change mitigation strategies (Pauliuk et al, 2012;Roca-Puigròs et al, 2023;Streeck et al, 2021). The growing use of SEM models can be attributed-among others-to their multiple and diverse purposes, such as (1)…”
