The role of risk aversion and labor constraints in the adoption of low input practices supported by the CAP green payments in cash crop farms

Abstract: Since the late 1980s, many alternative practices have been proposed to European farmers to reduce pesticide and input use in general. These practices have been promoted by agro-environmental contracts signed between individual farmers and the European Union and by which farmers engage themselves in changing their practices. The adoption rate of these measures has remained very low in many European regions particularly in Southwestern France. This article aims at stressing the role played by risk attitude and l… Show more

“…In fact, the biggest barrier for the adoption of BioCircular practices is the increasing labor demands that the new practices need. Indeed, this finding is in accordance with an increasing body of literature that includes labor and labor reallocation as an important determinant in farmers' adoption processes [14,22,23]. Consequently, the levels of premiums or penalties should be higher in farm 1 than in farm 2, as the first one has lower labor availability.…”

“…It might have been particularly relevant to higher labor inputs and time consumption, which reduced the competitiveness of theses farms in the market. Ridier et al [35] considered the labor force to be the main obstacle to agri-environmental practices. This is because the practices are labor intensive, and the marginal cost varies with the balance between labor demand and the resources available on a farm.…”

“…Ghali et al (2014) conceptualisent l'AEI en mobilisant les concepts néoclassiques de l'économie de l'environnement (externalité), de l'économie écologique (production jointe) et de l'économie de production (notamment son concept d'efficacité technique) pour éclairer la considération économique de l'intensification écologique. Cependant, l'adoption de pratiques issues de l'AEI dépend de plusieurs facteurs et reste limitée (Ridier et al, 2013).…”
