The paper aims to investigate the relationship between strategy and structure in the high-technology enterprises. The study attempts to ascertain how chief executive officers perceive the impact of strategy on organizational structure, and likewise impact of structure on strategy, at two phases in the innovation process: the phase of innovation exploration; and the phase of innovation exploitation. The research was conducted in 61 high-technology companies based in Poland that operate either in Poland or in the global marketplace. The results show that, during the exploration of innovation, chief executive officers consider that the impact of organizational structure on strategy is stronger than the impact of strategy on structure. During the exploitation of innovations, the impact of strategy on structure is stronger.

“…Natomiast w fazie eksploatacji, w której wdraża się nowe technologie w postaci produktów, które następnie się dystrybuuje, struktura organizacyjna powinna zapewnić wysoką sprawność działań, a więc może mieć bardziej mechanistyczny charakter 4 . Atrybuty struktury organizacyjnej określono przez pryzmat następujących cech: specjalizacji, trwałości podziału zadań, standaryzacji, konfiguracji, centralizacji, formalizacji [Pugh, Hickson 1976;Daft 2007] oraz elastyczności i sieciowości [Mukkala 2010;Bahrami, Evans 2011]. Abstract:Universities have gained an increasing amount of attention in the literature as drivers of knowledge-based development. Still, the mere presence of a university alone is not sufficient: the mechanisms of how knowledge is transferred from universities to industry are an important factor affecting the successfulness of the universities' participation in the development of the local economy.The different mechanisms of knowledge transfer are under review here in the context of a peripheral town, Joensuu, in eastern Finland. In relation to the knowledge transfer mechanisms in the region a lack of entrepreneurial spirit of graduates and faculty and a partial mismatch between regional business life needs and university research was reported. This paper discusses how to alleviate these lacks and mismatches. Interviews conducted for the study also reveal that the peripheral location of Joensuu poses some restrictions on the availability of skilled workers, but this is compensated by employee loyalty to their employers.
