The role of reciprocity in human-robot social influence

Abstract: Summary Humans are constantly influenced by others’ behavior and opinions. Of importance, social influence among humans is shaped by reciprocity: we follow more the advice of someone who has been taking into consideration our opinions. In the current work, we investigate whether reciprocal social influence can emerge while interacting with a social humanoid robot. In a joint task, a human participant and a humanoid robot made perceptual estimates and then could overtly modify them after observing th… Show more

“…Reciprocity potentially improves human-robot collaboration and trust and has been called a "key social mechanism" to build successful companion robots (Burger et al, 2017;Kahn et al, 2007;Lorenz et al, 2016). For instance, reciprocity supports collaboration with a robot during a joint judgment task (Zonca et al, 2021). Despite research on adults' reciprocity toward robots (e.g., Hsieh et al, 2020;Sandoval et al, 2016Sandoval et al, , 2021, little is known about the development of reciprocity in child-robot interaction (CRI).…”

“…The bidirectional interaction between human-like social robots and people is important for their acceptance. Indeed, reciprocity is key for social interactions (Zonca et al ., 2021). Finally, trust is one of the most important emotions expressed by users when interacting with VI (Borghi and Mariani, 2022), and a social ability is necessary to build trust (Fernandes and Oliveira, 2021).…”
