The role of premorbid personality and social cognition in suicidal behaviour in first-episode psychosis: A one-year follow-up study

Abstract: Symptom severity at illness onset, premorbid schizoid personality traits and ToM impairment emerged as predictors of SA in this FEP sample, which, if replicated, may be useful in identifying high-risk groups and implementing more targeted suicide prevention programs in FEP.

“…On the other hand, the fact that in previous work, we did not find any significant differences between patients with SA and those without SA in any of the PANSS dimensions (Canal‐Rivero et al., ) or in global functioning at baseline ( U = 177.00, p = .86) did not seem to support interpretation of suicidal‐related behaviors as markers of illness severity.…”

“…Finally, SA may be viewed as a marker of illness severity and the findings of the present study interpreted as tautological. However, in a previous study performed with the same sample, we did not find any significant differences between with and without SA in the different dimensions measured by the PANSS (Canal‐Rivero et al., ). Furthermore, in this study, SA patients did not score significantly worse in global functioning at baseline ( U = 177.00, p = .86).…”

“…A recent study found an association between lower scores on the Mayer-Salovey-Caruso Emotional Intelligence Test (MSCEIT) and suicidal ideation (along with positive symptom severity) in schizophrenia (Comparelli et al, 2018). Poorer performance on a false belief task predicted suicide attempts in first-episode patients (again, in conjunction with severity of positive symptoms) (Canal-Rivero et al, 2017). In addition, misperceiving neutral emotion faces as angry was associated with negative interpersonal appraisals that were associated with history of active suicide ideation and attempts, despite no association between overall emotion recognition performance and histories of ideation or behavior (Villa et al, 2018b).…”
