Suicidal Behavior and Personality Traits Contribute to Disability in First‐episode Psychosis: A 1‐Year Follow‐up Study

Abstract: Suicidal behavior prevention could improve psychosocial functioning, particularly personal care, in FEP. In addition, sociopathic and schizotypy personality traits as well as poor premorbid adjustment during late adolescence appear to be useful early markers of future disability.

“…This percentage is slightly higher than the one (23%) observed by Flanagan and Compton (2012) on 109 FEP subjects, aged 18 to 50 years, with recent hospitalization. However, it is substantially in line with what reported on lifetime prevalence of suicidal ideation in clinical populations of FEP inpatients and outpatients aged 15 to 50 years, showing rates ranging from 26% to 40% (Canal‐Rivero et al, 2019; Pelizza et al, 2019f). Together with the evidence of approximately 3% of current suicide attempts in our FEP total sample, this finding confirms the need for a routine monitoring and more targeted intervention strategies addressing suicide risk and prevention in FEP adolescents and adults (Pelizza, Azzali, et al, 2019c, Pelizza, Poletti, et al, 2019f).…”

“…Moreover, Joiner et al (2001) reported that people with schizotypal symptoms were more associated with self-hatred and suicidality, and that the combination of self-hatred and a diagnostic status of schizophrenia-spectrum symptoms may be a predictor of suicidality. The early intervention of suicidality targeting specific personality traits may be beneficial to decreasing suicide rates (Canal-Rivero et al, 2018).…”

“…Suicidal behavior may also be associated with functional aspects of mental health such as social functioning, disability, and quality of life (QOL). However, this issue has rarely been investigated, and most studies have been cross-sectional in design [5,6].…”
