The Role of Power Line Communications in the Smart Grid Revisited: Applications, Challenges, and Research Initiatives

Abstract: Power line communications (PLC) have been an active research area for many years and it is still the case, mainly because they present economic and technical natural advantages for a wide range of applications using the existing electrical grid as transmission medium. In this paper, the authors provide an update on PLC technologies and their applications in Smart Grids, the main challenges they are currently facing, how they can be addressed, and the current research initiatives.INDEX TERMS Communications netw… Show more

“…In SG applications, ICT is their key aspect while among the available ICT solutions, BPL technology presents some natural advantages that render the related BPL networks as the most suitable implementation for SG applications [2]. However, BPL networks operate across a hostile medium for communications since transmission and distribution power grid infrastructure and equipment have been designed to deliver power rather than information [1], [3]- [7].…”

“…PLC is seen as a viable communication solution partly due to the far-reaching electric power grid and the low deployment cost compared to other technologies [1]. In medium voltage (MV) distribution grids, PLC is used for realtime smart metering, industrial load switching, data privacy with embedded security requirements, demand side home energy management system, and renewable energy monitoring systems [1]- [3]. In smart home networks, PLC modems with in-built couplers are attached to low voltage (LV) electric power outlets to facilitate data communication by providing broadband Internet access.…”
