The role of parent-child relationship, school climate, happiness, and empathy to predict cyberbullying behavior

Abstract: The lack of research on cyberbullying among Indonesian adolescents has become one of the critical arguments of this research. This study aimed to discover the factors that contribute to cyberbullying. This study took samples of students from three schools. The sample was 112 junior to senior high school students. The findings of this study indicate that school climate, parent-child relationship, and empathy have a significant role that encourages cyberbullying.

“…In addition, our results are in line with quantitative research that found a negative relationship between empathy and the willingness to engage in online hate speech (Soral et al, in press), and that empathy was positively related to the perceived harm of offline hate speech (Cowan & Khatchadourian, 2003). Moreover, our results are aligned with research on cyberbullying perpetration that found a positive relationship between moral disengagement and cyberbullying perpetration (Marín-López et al, 2020; Meter & Bauman, 2018; Paciello et al, 2020; Romera et al, 2021; Thornberg et al, 2019; Wang et al, 2017) and a negative association between empathy and cyberbullying perpetration (Del Rey et al, 2016; Safaria & Suyono, 2020; Wright & Wachs, 2021; Zych et al, 2019). We therefore conclude that moral disengagement and empathy are common correlates of both cyberbullying and online hate speech perpetration.…”

“…Their study showed that a prolonged contact intervention resulted in an increase in empathy toward refugees and a decrease in willingness to perpetrate hate speech. Furthermore, a negative association between empathy and cyberbullying perpetration is well established among young people in numerous cross-sectional studies (e.g., Del Rey et al, 2016; Safaria & Suyono, 2020), longitudinal studies (e.g., Sorrentino et al, 2021; Wright & Wachs, 2021), and in meta-analyses (Zych et al, 2019). Given this research, one would anticipate the existence of a negative association between empathy and online hate speech perpetration.…”

“…Simultaneously with the process of socializing these values and norms, there will be an internalization process within the individual, so that it will then form a pattern of personality and behavior, so that it is in accordance with the values and norms he believes in. This will directly foster commitment and conformity to these social values and norms (Barton et al, 2014;Smith, 2003), thereby preventing individuals from engaging in deviant behavior, such as free sex, gambling and cyberbullying behavior (Safaria, & Suyono, 2020;Casey, et al, 2011;Landor, Simons, Gibbons, Simons, & Brody, 2011). It can be concluded that the current research findings contradict the theory and some previous research.…”

“…The rapid development of science and technology in the industrial revolution 4.0 era is inversely proportional to the degradation of morals among youth, marked by many young generations mired in a dark world [1]. This issue also permeates the structure of people's lives in Indonesia, especially education [2], [3]. The crisis of character not only occurs in Indonesia but has also become an international concern [4]- [6].…”
