The role of ITS in evacuation route optimization for emergency vehicles

Abstract: In this paper the application of ITS (Intelligent Transportation Systems) in road evacuation in the case of route optimization for emergency vehicles is reported. The ITS are usually used in transport to analyse the data and improve the system performances. In road evacuation, the ITS can be used at three levels: survey and transmission, control and user information. This structure allows managing an evacuation starting from the network monitoring and defining the optimal strategies to apply to speed up the ev… Show more

“…A large literature describes experiences connected to urban traffic monitoring. The traffic flow measures by means of monitoring techniques belong to two classes [5,6]:  measures at fixed points of the network with tools like loop detectors and image processing [7];  measures with floating cars [8] in the network (individual cars, taxis, transit system vehicles). In the information field, Maerivoet et al [9] propose a system able to capture the user behavioural giving information related to the travel cost variations, while in [10] is analysed the impact of user information in path choice.…”

“…These activities can be classified into homogeneous classes in terms of execution time and decision-maker of single activities: activities related to material infrastructures (e. g. interventions on physical characteristics); non-material activities (e. g. interventions on learning and training or on Intelligent Transportation Systems) ( [14,15]); activities related to equipment (e. g. interventions to acquire tools and specific transport means); management activities (e.g. interventions to design transportation services) [16][17][18][19][20]; governance and institutional activities (e.g.…”
