The role of interventional radiology for pediatric blunt renal trauma

Abstract: BackgroundThis study aimed to appraise the role of interventional radiology in children with blunt renal trauma.MethodsThe clinical data, injury severity score, days of hospital stay, outcomes and complications of pediatric renal trauma were recorded and evaluated. The two groups: the transcatheter arterial embolization (TAE) group and the non-TAE group were compared for clinical features and laboratory data.ResultsEighteen pediatric patients (12 boys, 6 girls with average age 12.4 ± 4.7 years) with blunt rena… Show more

“…Nearly three-quarters of patients with renal trauma are young and male ( 6 ). As the most common type of injury, blunt trauma remains a significant cause of morbidity and mortality in the population, accounting for 80-95% of renal trauma in Western countries caused by motor vehicle accidents, pedestrian accidents and falls ( 6 - 9 ), which is consistent with the findings of a study in China ( 10 ), although penetrating injuries are becoming more frequent due to an increase in violence, gunshot wounds and stabbing wounds. Given the well-protected anatomic location of the kidney, only major external forces lead to significant kidney injury.…”

“…Many gynecological disorders that cause acute abdominal pain (e.g., uterine disorders, ovarian disorders, pelvic inflammatory disease) demonstrate characteristic CT findings [ 17 ]. MDCT can provide useful information about abdominal fluid density differences in the pelvic cavity, and the presence of extravasated contrast material as an indicator of active bleeding [ 18 , 19 ]. In one patient in the present study, sonography revealed a large amount of intrabdominal fluid and a hyperechogenic ovarian cyst, and a contrast-enhanced MDCT showed active extravasation from the ovarian cyst.…”

“…However, strategies such as optimized scanning protocols according to age- or weight-based adjustments for children, decreasing the unnecessary examination and scanning phase, and user education for pediatricians and radiological technologies can decrease the risk from radiation exposure. [ 13 ] Although bronchoscopy is more invasive than CT scan, it is commonly used to obtain tissue for histopathologic diagnosis and is useful to assess the resectability of the tumor.…”
