The role of hydrogen sulfide in gastrointestinal tract functioning (review)

Abstract: Despite a fairly large amount of literature data about the involvement of hydrogen sulfide in physiological and pathophysiological processes, its role in gastrointestinal tract functioning has not been studied sufficiently. This review systematizes and generalizes the mechanisms of H2S-associated regulation of gastrointestinal secretion and motility on the basis of literature sources processing and own research results. We analysed world professional literature and sources in Google Scholar, PubMed, MedLine, E… Show more

“…The literature describes a number of biologically active substances of endothelial and plasma origin, which regulate vascular tone. Among these mediators, in addition to prostaglandins, oxygen free radicals, nitric oxide, and H 2 S have recently been identified [4,13,24,25,28]. Therefore, the search for and research of new drugs that have anti-inflammatory and analgesic activity, it is necessary to establish their safety in the gastrointestinal tract.…”

“…Since then, there has been a dramatic shift from the belief that H 2 S works entirely as an environmental toxin to the understanding that H 2 S plays an important role in organ function and homeostasis [ 5 ]. H 2 S has been revealed to take part in the regulation of various pathophysiological conditions within mammalian systems, such as vascular tone and blood pressure [ 6 , 7 ], neurotransmission [ 8 ], angiogenesis [ 9 ], cardiac function [ 10 ], various leukocytic functions [ 11 ], penile erectile function [ 12 ], and gastrointestinal tract function [ 13 ]. In general, when the concentration of H 2 S in tissues or cells is high, H 2 S is regarded as a toxic substance and its oxidation products—persulfide, sulfite, thiosulfate, and sulfate—may give rise to cytotoxic effects through inhibiting mitochondrial cytochrome C oxidase and disrupting cell energy production, resulting in tissue inflammation or DNA damage [ 14 ].…”
