The Role of Human Values in Explaining Support for European Union Membership

Abstract: In recent years, there has been greater scholarly enquiry into explaining variation in support for European Union membership. We theorise that one cause of such variation is likely to be non-political psychological predispositions, such as one’s personal values. We test this proposition by applying Schwartz’s theory of basic human values to predict voting intentions in hypothetical referendums on EU membership. We theorise that these values determine both voting intentions and more proximate explanatory variab… Show more

“…Nevertheless, Akaliyski’s study, as well as Vignoles et al (2018), suggest that such a shared culture may be nascent across the members of the Union, although it may take a long time for it to take a distinct shape. Vice-versa, Dennison et al (2021) find that values predict attitudes toward European integration: universalist values support European Union membership whereas conservation values oppose it. Thus, cultural and political integration seem to be in a complex two-way relationship.…”

“…We included the “abstain” option to avoid forcing participants to report a defined voting intention. However, to test our hypotheses regarding EU-leave voting intention, we excluded “abstain” responses ( n = 106) (see Dennison et al, 2021). We coded the remaining responses as “Remain = 1”, “Leave = 2”.…”

“…However, multicategorical dependent variables pose a statistical challenge in the models we test. Thus, we decided to dichotomise this variable by excluding abstainers (Dennison et al, 2021). Nevertheless, the meaning and implications of our results remained the same when using the dichotomous or the multicategorical variable.…”

“…We test whether public support for the EU-wide establishment of a social welfare scheme depends not only on political attitudes but also on the more fundamental basic human values of the respondents. The relevance of such human values has already been established for other fields of policy preferences Dennison et al 2020Dennison et al , 2021Schwartz 2016;Sedig and Davidov 2018;Swedlow 2008;Raijman et al 2022).…”
