The Role of Exosomes in Pancreatic Cancer

Abstract: Pancreatic cancer remains one of the deadliest cancers in the world, as a consequence of late diagnosis, early metastasis and limited response to chemotherapy, under which conditions the potential mechanism of pancreatic cancer progression requires further study. Exosomes are membrane vesicles which are important in the progression, metastasis and chemoresistance in pancreatic cancer. Additionally, they have been verified to be potential as biomarkers, targets and drug carriers for pancreatic cancer treatment.… Show more

“…Unfortunately, most of the patients with pancreatic cancer fail to develop important symptoms before reaching the advanced stage of the disease. Moreover, the CA19-9 antigen test, currently in use, is not sufficient to diagnose pancreatic cancer with high sensitivity and specificity [3]. According to GLOBOCAN data, 458,918 new cases of pancreatic cancer and 432,242 new deaths were recorded in 2018.…”

“…Exosomes are potential communicative vectors which are important in the progression of human cancers, including pancreatic cancer. 41,42 Grimolizzi et al reported that exosomes from patients with NSCLC could induce malignant transformation in epithelial cells. 43 Wei et al indicated that gastric cancer cell-derived exosomal miR-15b-3p led to the malignant transformation of gastric mucosa epithelium cells, promoting cell proliferation and migration.…”

“… 34 , 35 Many studies have demonstrated that exosome could be used as diagnostic biomarker for PDAC. 12 , 13 , 36 In addition, some studies have reported that exosomal miRNA can improve the accuracy of cancer detection. 28 , 37 , 38 Xu et al 39 show that plasma exosome miR-196a and miR-1246 are two potential indicators of localized pancreatic cancer.…”

“…Exosomal miRNA from pancreatic cancer cells may promote invasion and metastasis or chemoresistance, such as miRNA-222 and miRNA-155. 36 In the present study, we also performed in vitro study to test the role of miRNA-1226-3p on biological behaviors of PDAC. Interestingly, we found that high level of miRNA-1226-3p expression could inhibit PANC-1 and BXP-3 cell viability, promoted cell apoptosis and inhibit cell migration.…”
