The Role of Developmental Psychobiology in the Unification of Psychology

Abstract: Abstract:The interdisciplinary nature of Developmental Psychobiology (DPB) means that it already unifies many perspectives in psychology. DPB explanations of the development of both individual differences and species-typical behaviors include information from cells, tissue, organ systems, family, societal groups, and sociocultural customs to explain the development of both "normal" and "abnormal" behavioral traits. DPB also contextualizes understanding of the developmental processes governing the manifestation… Show more

“…These measures of infants' attentional efficiency—face detection, attention capture, and holding—hold promise for identifying infants at heightened risk for neurodevelopmental disorders (Elsabbagh et al., ; Gliga, Bedford, Charman, & Johnson; BASIS Team, ; Machado, Whitaker, Smith, Patterson, & Bauman, ). Animal studies have a critical role in this endeavor, highlighting the phylogenetic roots and neural underpinnings of healthy and atypical social development (Gómez, ; Michel, ).…”

“…We, like other developmental scientists, have a long‐term goal of explaining phenotypic variation (e.g., Lickliter, 2017; Michel, 2013) within the situated, contextualized nature of development (e.g., Bronfenbrenner, 1979; Deák et al, 2013; Keller, 2018, 2019a, 2019b; Tulviste et al, 2019; Weisner, 2015). In particular, a long‐term goal is to explain phenotypic variation by linking local socialization practices to developmental outcomes in social cognition (e.g., Leavens, Hopkins, et al, 2005; Morelli et al, 2018; Nugent et al, 1989; Racine & Carpendale, 2007; Schieffelin & Ochs, 1998).…”
