The Role of Context for Theory Development: Evidence From Entrepreneurship Research on Russia

Abstract: To better understand the role of context for theory development in entrepreneurship, we build a theoretical framework which captures four aspects of the “theory to context” and “context to theory” interplay. We use the results from a literature review of entrepreneurship research on Russia published in leading journals over the past 30-year period to test our framework and show how contextualization enhances theoretical development in the entrepreneurship field and how context theorizing leads to the developme… Show more

“…Our findings imply that accounting for context and boundary constraints is important for a better understanding and explanation of the entrepreneurial gender gap. Hence, considering such contextual constraints strengthens the theoretical contribution of this article (Shirokova et al, 2022; Welter et al, 2019).…”

“…Overall, the goal of this paper consists in providing a broader reflection of forms, reasons and constraints of entrepreneurial activities of academic faculties under fragile institutional settings, using the mixed embeddedness approach to agency and its institutional frame. According to Shirokova et al. (2023), the incremental knowledge of our findings should be classified as belonging to Quadrant 3, i.e.…”

“…Despite the combined efforts of numerous scholars and policymakers to promote entrepreneurship as a universal tool for self-development among Indigenous peoples, the lack of specificity has hindered the success of such initiatives so far (Salmon, Chavez, and Murphy 2021). Even though recent research has highlighted the impact of context on the emergence, growth, and decline of business ventures (Shirokova, Beliaeva, and Manolova 2022), context-sensitive comparisons in Indigenous entrepreneurship remain few and far between (Scheyvens et al 2021). However, contexts matter as they influence the thoughts, emotions, and behaviours of entrepreneurs.…”

“…By providing a multi-context perspective of entrepreneurship in place, we help to push the place approach to entrepreneurship forward by highlighting both the 'objective' and 'subjective' nature of place (Welter, Baker, and Wirsching 2019). In this sense, we argue that the interaction between entrepreneurship and place should be accounted for as essential for sensitizing our theorization and setting the boundaries of its generalizability across different backgrounds and groups of people (Shirokova, Beliaeva, and Manolova 2022).…”
