The Role of Coagulase-Negative Staphylococcus spp. and Associated Somatic Cell Counts in the Ovine Mammary Gland

Abstract: The somatic cell count (SCC) of ewes' milk was determined by the Fossomatic method and compared with the bacteriological status of the mammary gland. Of 366 samples from uninfected udder halves, 64.5% had SCC less than 50 x 10(3) cells/ml, 81.9% had SCC less than 250 x 10(3), and 92.4% had less than 500 x 10(3) cells/ml. Of 130 bacteriologically positive samples, 91.1% had SCC more than 500 x 10(3) cells/ml and 98.8% more than 250 x 10(3). Of the examined milk samples 26.2% showed positive bacteriology during … Show more

“…This makes it more difficult to choose a threshold to discriminate between healthy and infected udders, which can be worldwide accepted. Some researchers (Fthenakis et al, 1991;Jones, 1991) reported discrimination values between healthy and infected glands ranging from 500 to 1600 × 10 3 cells/mL, while others (Bergonier et al, 1994;De la Cruz et al, 1994;Pengov, 2001) reported values similar to those for cows (200-300 × 10 3 cells/mL). González-Rodríguez et al (1995) suggested that breed differences in SCC do exist.…”

“…In ewes of milk breeds, the physiological and pathological levels of somatic cells in milk range from 0.25 to 1.0 × 10 6 cells/ml (El-Saied et al, 1998;Pengov, 2001). Some authors state that the threshold between health and disease of an udder half in ewes is an SCC of 250-300 × 10 3 /ml (Pengov, 2001).…”

“…As glândulas mamárias foram consideradas positivas para a mastite subclínica quando apresentavam qualquer escore positivo ao California Mastitis Test (CMT) e com contagem de células somáticas (CCS) superior a 250.000 células / mL de leite (8) , em conjunto com o isolamento microbiológico. A interpretação dos resultados dos exames microbiológicos foi conduzida de acordo com Pradieé et al (9) , com crescimento simultâneo das colônias bacterianas nas duas amostras de leite colhidas de cada metade mamária.…”
